The deal with SPF in moisturiser
SPF moisturisers can provide some level of sun protection, but most don’t offer as much coverage as you think. Why?
- They’re often applied too lightly or unevenly
- Many contain SPF 15–30, which only works if applied generously
- And very few of us reapply during the day
That means your skin could still be exposed to UVA rays, the ones that cause pigmentation and ageing, especially important during pregnancy.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase melanin production, making your skin more prone to conditions like melasma (also known as the “mask of pregnancy”). Chemical vs. Mineral SPF: what is the difference?
Not all SPF is created equal. The biggest difference comes down to ingredients: whether they’re synthetic and lab-made or in a more natural form. Another key factor? How your skin interacts with them.

Chemical sunscreens (like oxybenzone) are absorbed into the skin, where they filter UV rays from within. Some of these ingredients, especially oxybenzone, have been linked to hormone disruption, which is why they’re often avoided during pregnancy.
Mineral sunscreens (like zinc oxide) sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays instead of absorbing them. They’re considered a safer option during pregnancy and are less likely to cause irritation, especially on sensitive or hormonal skin.
So, is an SPF in moisturiser enough?
It depends on the formula and how you use it. For everyday protection, layering your skincare properly matters:
Step 1: Apply a moisturiser to hydrate and prep the skin
Step 2: Apply a separate mineral SPF (broad spectrum)
Step 3: Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors
If you're using a multitasking moisturiser with SPF, make sure you’re applying the right amount, around ½ teaspoon for your face alone.
What to look for in a pregnancy & breastfeeding-safe moisturiser with SPF?
If you prefer a simplified routine, choose a moisturiser that’s:
- Formulated with mineral SPF (like zinc oxide)
- Free from known hormone-disrupting ingredients
- Designed for sensitive skin
- Rich in hydrating, brightening ingredients like vitamin C or bakuchiol
